Printing
Is there a step-by-step printer setup?
Yes. Open the Printer setup guide (also linked in the Label sheet panel on the Print tags page, next to Printer alignment). It walks you through six short steps: pick your paper, set the print window, set your printer's quality and paper type, print the alignment test, enter what you see on it, and check a real sheet.
Your answers are saved as you go, for this store in this browser. When you click Looks good, the Label sheet panel shows Printer set up.
Which print settings should I use?
In the print window (Chrome, Edge and most browsers):
- Paper size: Letter (8.5" × 11"). Taglea asks for Letter automatically.
- Margins: Default or None. Both come out the same, because Taglea already leaves its own small edge. Avoid Minimum and Custom: they add your printer's margins on top, which shifts Avery labels off their cut lines and can push cardstock tags onto an extra page.
- Scale: 100% or Actual size. Never "Fit to page", or every tag prints slightly smaller than its real size.
- Background graphics: on is best. Taglea asks the browser to print tag colours anyway, so leaving it off normally still works.
- Headers and footers: off, so the date and web address don't print on your tags.
Tip: print one sheet on plain paper first and hold it against your label sheet or cardstock to check alignment.
How do I print the alignment test?
- On the Print tags page, find the Label sheet panel on the right and click Avery labels (pre-cut label sheets).
- Pick the label sheet you use, for example Avery 5163 / 8163 (2" × 4", also 58163).
- Under Printer alignment, click Print alignment test. A new tab opens with label outlines, crosshairs and edge rulers. You don't need anything in your print list.
- Click Print Labels (or press Ctrl+P). Choose Paper Letter, Margins Default (or None), Scale 100% (Actual size), headers and footers off, and borderless printing off. Print it on plain paper.
- Hold the printout against a label sheet up to a window or lamp: the boxes should sit on the labels. If they don't, see My labels don't line up.
My labels don't line up with the label sheet
- In the print window, set Margins to Default or None (not Minimum) and Scale to 100% / Actual size. "Minimum" margins shrink and shift the whole sheet, so tags drift off their labels further down the page.
- Make sure the right sheet is picked in the Label sheet panel (for example Avery 5163 / 8163 / 58163 for 2" × 4" labels).
- Click Alignment test in the Label sheet panel and print it on plain paper with the same settings. Hold it against a label sheet up to a window or lamp: the boxes should sit on the labels.
- If they're all off by the same amount, use Right and Down under Printer alignment to nudge them (1/32" steps; negative moves left or up). If the boxes are a little smaller than the labels and drift more toward the bottom, set Scale slightly above 100% (for example 100.5). Print the test again until it lines up. Taglea remembers these for your store.
If everything lines up but the outer edge of the left and right labels stays white, see The outer edge of my labels stays white. If part of the tag is cut off, see Part of my tag is cut off at the paper edge.
The outer edge of my labels stays white
Most printers can't put ink on the outer edge of the paper (usually about the outer 1/8 in). Avery label sheets have labels very close to the paper edge, so the outer sliver of the left and right labels can stay white even when everything else lines up. That's the printer, not Taglea. You have two options:
Option A: borderless printing. In your printer's own settings (for Canon: Page Setup, tick Borderless Printing, then move Amount of Extension to the smallest setting), turn on borderless printing. Borderless makes the printer enlarge the page slightly, so then print the Alignment test from the Label sheet panel and set Scale under Printer alignment below 100% (usually 97 to 99%), plus the Right/Down nudge if needed, until the boxes sit on the labels. Taglea remembers this for your store.
Option B: leave borderless off and use tag styles with a white or light outer edge, so the thin unprinted sliver doesn't show.
If words or pictures get cut off, see Part of my tag is cut off at the paper edge.
Part of my tag is cut off at the paper edge
If a stripe, word or picture at the outer end of the left or right labels is cut off (not just white), your printer can't put ink that close to the paper edge. Taglea can move that part of the tag in for you:
- In the Label sheet panel, click Alignment test and print it on plain paper (Margins Default or None, Scale 100%).
- On the left and right edges you'll see short rulers with a tick every 1/32 in, labelled 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2. Find the first tick that actually printed on each side. For example, if the first visible tick is just past the 1/8 label, your edge is about 5/32 in.
- Under Printer alignment, enter that number in Unprintable edge (use the larger of the left and right). Taglea remembers it for your store.
- Print the alignment test again: blue dashed lines show where tag content now stops on the outer labels.
Only label sheets are affected. The labels stay in place and the background still covers the whole label; the tag's design (text, pictures, barcode and the tag style's artwork, like stripes and frames) on the left and right labels shrinks slightly toward the middle so nothing gets cut off.
Which label sheets are affected by my printer's edge?
Every printer has a thin strip around the paper edge where it can't put ink. Whether you see it depends on how close the labels come to the paper edge. Here is how far each label sheet Taglea supports sits from the edge (anything under about 1/4 in can show a white sliver):
| Sheet | Left and right edge | Top and bottom edge | White sliver likely? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avery 5160 / 8160 1" × 2.625", 30 per sheet | 3/16 in (0.19) | 1/2 in | Yes, on the outer side of the left and right labels |
| Avery 5163 / 8163 / 58163 2" × 4", 10 per sheet | 5/32 in (0.16) | 1/2 in | Yes, on the outer side of the left and right labels |
| Avery 5164 / 8164 3.33" × 4", 6 per sheet | 5/32 in (0.16) | 1/2 in | Yes, on the outer side of the left and right labels |
| Avery 5162 / 8162 1.33" × 4", 14 per sheet | 5/32 in (0.16) | 5/6 in (0.83) | Yes, on the outer side of the left and right labels |
| Avery 5167 / 8167 0.5" × 1.75", 80 per sheet | 0.3 in | 1/2 in | No |
| Avery 94200 2" × 2", 12 per sheet | 5/8 in | 5/8 in top, 7/8 in bottom | No |
Typical printer edges: inkjet printers usually can't print the outer 1/8 in or so on the sides (many offer borderless printing to get around it, see The outer edge of my labels stays white). Laser printers usually leave about 1/6 to 1/4 in on all sides and have no borderless option.
Easiest fix on any printer: use tag styles with a white or light outer edge, so the unprinted sliver doesn't show. The top and bottom of these sheets are far enough from the edge on every printer.
My prints look dull or faded
If your tags print sharp and solid from the browser's own print window but dull or faded through your printer's own settings window (the Windows or printer-maker dialog, for example when you turn on borderless printing), the printer driver's settings have taken over. Check these in the printer's settings:
- Media Type (or Paper Type): pick a matte, label, cardstock or heavyweight setting instead of Plain Paper. Plain paper tells the printer to use less ink.
- Print Quality: High instead of Standard.
- Some printers also put down less ink in borderless mode on plain paper, so the media type matters even more there.
Tip: set these once in Windows under Settings, Printers & scanners, your printer, Printing preferences. Then the browser's print window uses them too, so you get the same result every time.
Plain cardstock or Avery label sheets: which should I pick?
Plain cardstock (you cut): every tag prints at its own tag style's real size, packed onto Letter sheets in print list order, with cut guides so you can trim them with a paper trimmer or scissors. Good for mixed sizes and heavy 65–110 lb cardstock.
Avery label sheets (pre-cut): pick the sheet you bought (for example Avery 5163, 2" × 4"). Tags land exactly on the pre-cut labels. Use Start at label # to skip labels you already peeled off a partly used sheet, so nothing is wasted.
What are cut guides and the gap between tags?
Cut guides are faint dotted lines around each tag on plain cardstock, so you know exactly where to cut. Turn them on or off with Show dotted cut guides in the Label sheet panel.
Gap between tags (None, 1/16", 1/8" or 1/4") leaves a little space between tags. With no gap, neighbouring tags share a cut line; a gap lets you cut each tag on its own lines and is more forgiving if your cuts aren't perfectly straight. Taglea remembers your choice for your store.
What does "Printed OK, clear these" do?
After a sheet prints well, click Printed OK, clear these on the print sheet. It removes only the tags that were on that sheet from your print list. Tags that were skipped, and anything you added to the print list after the sheet opened, stay. If you clicked it by mistake, click Undo in the message that appears (it stays for about 10 seconds).
Tags and tag styles
How do I print some products in a different tag style?
On the Print tags page, use the Print in picker at the top of the Products box. It starts on "Each category's default style". Choose another style and the products you add to the print list from then on print in that style. The print list's Template column shows the style each tag will print in.
What does the Lock button next to "Print in" do?
Pick a style, then click Lock. A "Locked: style name" badge appears and everything you add to the print list uses that style, even after you leave the page and come back, until you click Unlock. Unlocking goes back to each category's default style. Handy for printing a batch of sale tags or shelf talkers.
Editing one tag vs editing a blueprint
A blueprint is the layout for one category in one tag style (for example "Gifts & Home in Shelf Label 4×2"). Every product of that category printed in that style follows it.
- Opening a tag from your print list edits only that tag. Save with the disk icon. The N changes badge lists how this tag differs from its blueprint; click × on a line to put just that back, or Remove all.
- To change all tags of that category and style, click Edit blueprint in the editor header, or use Catalog → Blueprints → Open in designer, then Save blueprint.
What is the Visible Attributes pop-up?
In the tag editor, Visible Attributes chooses which details print on the tag. For each one, Show label prints its name (like "Origin:") and Show value prints the detail itself. Ticking or unticking updates the preview straight away; save the tag (or the blueprint) to keep it.
Why is the text toolbar greyed out?
The Text Editor toolbar works on one piece of text at a time. Click a text bubble on the tag (like the product name or price) to select it, and the toolbar turns on. Click an empty part of the tag to deselect.
Products and barcodes
How do barcodes work?
Put the product's UPC, EAN or SKU in its Barcode field (Catalog → product). Valid UPC-A, EAN-13 and EAN-8 codes print in that standard format; anything else prints as Code 128 exactly as typed.
To show the barcode on a tag, pick a tag in the print list and tick Show barcode under the tag preview, then drag or resize it and click Save for this category. It applies to every product of that category in that tag style that has a code.
Where do I keep logos, badges and pictures?
In Catalog → Media. Upload PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG images (up to 5 MB each). Taglea includes starter badges like Sale, New, Organic and Local. Replacing an image updates every tag that uses it.
Data feeds (keeping prices in sync)
How do Data feeds keep my prices up to date?
A data feed copies price changes from your register or inventory system into Taglea and adds the changed products to your print list (optionally only regular stock items).
- Go to Data feeds and choose Connect a database (for Microsoft RMS, SQL Server, MySQL or Access) or Upload a spreadsheet (CSV or Excel).
- For a database, install the small Taglea Sync program on your store computer using the steps shown. It only reads your data, through its own read-only login.
- Match your columns (item code, name, price and so on) and save.
- The first sync is a preview. If it looks right, click Looks right, apply and keep it updated. From then on changes apply on their own.
Prices you change by hand in Taglea stay put unless the price in your system changes, every batch can be undone from Activity, and a sync that would change a lot of products at once waits for your OK.
